Gestures of Despair
Playing around with what the character in my pop surrealism assignment will "look like"...actually, probably closer to "feel". I'm using Sam Kieth as inspiration to loosen up and try to hit emotion instead of necessarily accuracy. These were all done VERY quickly, all 12 were finished in less time than it took to play 2 songs on my iPod.

concept for Pop Surrealism.
This is purely a mock-up, most of the text will be hand-painted, and the background will be much more distressed...going to go for a Sam Kieth vibe on this one.

Tight layout for "Darker Than You Think" cover
These were supposed to be pencils, but I'm painting it anyway, so I figured it was ok to use a value study..
Anyway, here's the layout for my cover...will be done in a 1940s pulp style.

Dog Sailor
From my watercolour sketchbook, about 30 minutes of drawing/painting. Initial idea based on a statue from MezoAmerica we saw at LACMA this afternoon....clearly I changed it some!

Faeries Observe Downtown
Speedpainting in photoshop, just under 2 hours.
[edit] Uploaded the wrong version :( Here's the real one, and I'll leave the last one for process.

sci-fi speedpaint
Sat down this afternoon with no plan, no requirements and no ideas, and just threw strokes down until something started to come of it. Took just under 2 hours. Clearly, I could have taken it further, but I'm thinking of this as basically a gesture drawing in paint.

Pop Surrealism - Encounter #3
Based on feedback from class, revised to make it entirely 3D, punched up the saturation and showed more of the forest.

Pop Surrealism - Encounter #2
This has been an interesting one...since I have a hard time understanding what makes something "surreal" or not, I'm not sure which of the 3 of these best expresses the concept...
Here are some hi-res scans of the two character archetypes:

Capt. Nemo detail callouts.
Here are 2 detail callouts I did for Concept Art. Someone else in my group made the silhouette, and I'm playing with how to create the detail.
