As my friend Chris Oatley is talking about  these days, I truly love personal projects, and here is a guy who got an art job at Blizzard from Australia by doing Starcraft fan-art.  They sponsored his visa and gave him a job...that's about as rare a thing as I've ever heard...but then again, he painted some amazing Zerg...

He's a great artist, not just someone who learned to copy one style, he works in a variety...

Even super-cute :)

Artist Series - Day 14: Jen Zee

Another video game source, this one "Bastion"  Jen Zee is the art director at Supergiant Games, and from what I can tell is pretty much responsible for the entire look of Bastion.  This may sound weird, but she paints like I dream.

Artist Series - Day 13: Scott Kester

Another jump, this time to a character designer!  Scott Kester did the designs at Gearbox for Borderlands 2, and it was that game's art book that introduced me to his work.  I love his loose marker drawings as much as his tight, finished work, maybe more.

Scott doesn't seem to have much of a web presence, but he has done several interviews about Borderlands 2.

Artist Series - Day 12: Julius Klever

Back to dead painters!  I'd be surprised if too many of you knew about this guy, which is a huge shame.  There were some amazing naturalist painters in Russia in the late 1800s, but for whatever reason, not too many people have heard of them.

Artist Series - Day 10: Karla Ortiz

Back from the realm of the old dead men of sci-fi art to the world of young, living women!  I don't actually remember when I first heard of Karla Ortiz' work...as I recall, it just sort of started bubbling up around me, with friends mentioning her with respect and a bit of awe.  I met her at IlluxCon this last September, and she's as awesome in real life as her art.

According to her blog, she's got a show in LA on Feb 1st, which, coincidentally, is the first day I'll be in LA for CDA...I may have to look into checking it out!
