Artist Series - Day 138: Maciej Kuciara

When I was at concept design academy, I kept hearing today's artist's name, over and over again, usually with reverence and awe.  When I did the research, I understood why.  He mostly does concept art for live action movies and video games (although I did really like his Magic: the Gathering cards).  He blends 3D, photography and painting together to create something with absurdly strong levels of realism.  He's a beast!

Artist Series - Day 137: Elliot Alfredius

Another European illustrator with a flair for character design.  Don't know much about him, but I love his sense of style :)

Artist Series - Day 136: Bill Cone

The Pixar pastel guy. Really, what more needs to be said? Amazing control of colours and shapes.

Artist Series - Day 135: Sam Bosma (slightly NSFW)

Today's artist does some really interesting things with character design.  I was reintroduced to him recently by a friend, and I'm really enjoying his style a lot.

Artist Series - Day 134: Brandon Graham

I love Brandon's work.  I love his drawings, and I love his "slice of life" stories set in the most bizarre places.  There's a sense of life and again, authenticity, that calls to me.

I learned about him right after my first year at art school.  I had agreed to "intern" for a local animation production, which really meant they were gracious enough to let me sit in their office for 2 weeks...dear GODS I was bad....but anyway, they set me to making props and animal-human hybrids based on the work of Brandon, who had been on the project before me.  They didn't use anything I did, but it was a great experience, and I was introduced to some great art :)

(RX Comics is my local comic shop btw, I love he put it in there)

Artist Series - Day 133: Christian Schellewald

Oh, man, today's artist actually posts *concept art* on his blog instead of just marketing illustrations!  I have to thank the "Art of Dreamworks Animation" for reminding me of Christian.  I had bought his book "Kolonie", but never made the connection with the rest of his amazing career.  I love his stuff....he makes sketchy watercolours work for concept art!

I literally just downloaded every image on his website ;)  It has become my new mission to talk to Christian in real life.

Artist Series - Day 132: Iain McCaig

Ok, today's artist just won the "Spectrum Grand Master" award for sci-fi/fantasy illustration this last weekend.....so, if you're into that sort of thing, you should probably know him...

He also has done and continues to do a lot of design and storyboards for a little film franchise called "Star Wars".

I started paying attention to Iain with his Gnomon DVD on storytelling, which is also fantastic.  He has more energy that an entire daycare of 2 year olds on espresso.

As a final note, he's going to be giving a guest lecture at the TLC Workshop this coming weekend in the Seattle area...and I've seen him teach, it is amazing.  GO!
