Artist Series - Day 181: Otto Schmidt

image

No relation to yesterday's artist, and he's not the Soviet hero either.  Today's artist does have a great graphic style and sense of play in his work, and was suggested to me by my friend John Wagenman.  Otto Schmidt is also known for his pin up girl drawings.

Today's artist is the author of "Alla Prima", which may be one of the best books on how to paint I've ever read.  Makes me want to pick up oils....

Artist Series - Day 177: Sean Gordon Murphy

Another crazy-good comic book inker for today's artist.  I found out about his work via his creator-owned project "Punk Rock Jesus" and "American Vampire".  I met him last year at HeroesCon, and he was a really cool guy to talk to :)

Artist Series - Day 176: Darwyn Cooke

image

Today's artist is a Canadian comic book artist and writer who has done animation as well.  I love his graphic choices!

Artist Series - Day 175: Jean-Baptiste Monge

image

Today's artist is one of the "go to" guys for faerie watercolour paintings.  His work may not be as well known in English speaking North America, although he did do a bunch of concept art and illustrations for Diablo 2....

I met him at his TLC workshop last Fall, and it was amazing!  Such an amazing artist and great teacher.

Artist Series - Day 174: Eric Canete (Slightly NSFW)

Oops, forgot to mirror from the source tumblr.  This is largely legacy, and for those of you who love Google+.

image

Today's artist also works in comic books, but he  has done other stuff too - like storyboards for "Tron: Uprising".  Super cool guy, he sat in on a "pitch clinic" session I did for an animation I've been developing, and his suggestions were amazing.

I love his sense of character, and the choices he makes in design.

Artist Series - Day 171: Todd Lockwood

image

Today's artist goes back to my first "deep dive" into Fantasy - TSR and Dungeons and Dragons.  I started playing D&D when I was 9, and Todd's work wasn't far behind that.  I met him at IlluxCon 2 years ago, and he did a paintover of what was at the time my best work...and it got much better.

Today's artist is one of my favorites from the 2nd Disney "Golden Age".   Character designer and animator, with an amazing blog that goes through everything you would every want to know about the animation industry.

Artist Series - Day 169: Norman Rockwell

image

"Stormin' Norman" Rockwell :)  Obviously, basically the entire world knows this guy's work, but in the wake of Illustration Master Class, I'm revisiting his work.  Check out his masterful use of reference, the authenticity of his figures, the elegance of his compositions.

Sure, some of his stuff is a bit fluffy, but he was a tireless defender of equal rights - there is a lot more to him than light Americana.  I tend to like his environmental stuff, which should be shocking to no one.

Today's artist is another one I learned of from my friend Sinan, and I don't know much about him except that I really enjoy his sense of abstraction, and how he uses composition.

Artist Series - Day 165: Rebecca Guay

image

Today's artist organizes the Illustration Master Class, has painted Magic cards, is on the cover of the next Spectrum, and a host of other super cool stuff.  She gave a lecture yesterday on "Authenticity, Emotion and Power" that was like listening to all the things I've been trying to work on in my own artwork boiled down into manageable bullet points.  I feel incredibly lucky to have met her.
